Five of the top-ranked college football teams lost to upstart underdogs on Saturday, the highlight being number one Georgia losing to unranked Auburn. The underdogs won with preparation, planning and relentless determination.
We are the underdogs in this upcoming midterm election and we, too, can pull off the upsets with preparation, planning and relentless determination.
Trump wants us to vote like he’s on the ballot, but the Republicans who want to keep him in power really don’t want us to vote at all. And they are taking extreme measures to keep us from our winning goal: the ballot box.
In North Carolina, the Republican-controlled Wake County election board moved a polling place from the center of North Carolina A & T (the largest 4-year HBCU) campus to a location a good 45 minute walk away. On the first day of early voting, more than 100 students organized and walked together to the more distant polling location, with some students waiting three hours to cast their ballots. Democracy: 1 Republicans: 0
Saturday was also the day of the 4th No Kings- Vote Early rallies. Upwards of 3,000 rallies were scheduled across the country. In the midst of the day, Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta shut down the No Kings Coalition Instagram account, impeding communications and coordination. The people showed up anyway, by the tens, hundreds and thousands, from San Diego to New York, even The Villages in Florida! signs aloft, protesting this administration and its Republican enablers. Democracy: 2 Republicans: 0
Moving polling places. Shutting down Instagram. Republicans really don’t want us to vote. These are just two examples of the lengths Republicans are willing to go in order to disenfranchise and to muzzle us. Texas. Ohio. North Carolina. Let’s not forget that Brian Fitzpatrick is a tried-and-true member of this Republican machine. Bob Harvie is our upstart underdog. With preparation, planning and relentless determination we can pull off the upset. We will show up at the polls, wherever they are, and we will VOTE. The time is ripe for a democratic sweep on November 3.
