Democracy is calling.

Democracy is calling.

In a nutshell, Flag Day commemorates the Continental Congress’ adoption of the first official US  flag on June 14, 1777. The first Flag Day was proposed in 1861 to support the Union side of the Civil War. In 1916, Woodrow Wilson designated June 14 as Flag Day, and in 1949 National Flag Day was established by an act of Congress.

It is the height of bad luck that Donald Trump’s birthday happens to fall on June 14th. Just as he stole the thunder of the Knicks/Spurs game 3, Trump, by sheer, rotten coincidence, is stealing the thunder of Flag Day, kicked to the curb to make way for a MAGA-ridden UFC cagefight, giving him another  platform to continue to co-opt our flag for his own agenda, twisting it to symbolize the mock-patriotism of his MAGA party.

I call B.S.

I call the Pledge of Allegiance.

We pledge  allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands. Not to Trump. Not to MAGA. To  the Republic, where the power belongs to the citizens, to ALL of us, not just a Trump few. Democracy is calling. It wants its flag back.

And that’s why on Flag Day we all must fly the flag. It is our act of resistance, of defiance, of loyalty to the democratic principles on which this country was founded… and it’s a delicious middle finger to MAGA pseudo-patriot posturing. It’s our flag. It’s our Republic. And yes, Mr Franklin, we’re  “dem” -well going to keep it.

Don't blow it.

Don't blow it.
