It’s exhilarating to see the Trump administration spiraling in panic in the face of plummeting approval numbers, rising inflation and democrat primary victories. It’s also dangerous. Trump desperately warned a room full of Christian conservatives, “The Democratic Party is becoming a Communist party.” “They do not believe in God.” They will close your churches. They will kill your people.” Hysterical rhetoric hoping to land upon credulous ears. House leader Mike Johnson added to the hyperbole, “The foundations of America are under violent and unprecedented attack,” and, more ominously, “I run the protection program,” jettisoning the Constitution and his moral compass in order to stay in power no matter what. Johnson was half right as he said, “The danger we have right now is the energy, the excitement, the grassroots operation, the money is on the side of the insurgent left…” Damn right it is. Danger to Republicans, not to us. Trump and Johnson are testing out vile and divisive rhetoric, hoping it will stick while papering over the fact that fewer and fewer Americans approve of what this administration is doing. Hence mob boss Johnson’s “protection” rhetoric (shades of Trump’s “I am your retribution.”). Their recourse in the face of growing grass roots resistance? Lies. Deflection. Fearmongering. A threat in the guise of protection. Because that’s all they got. We have the energy, the excitement, the grassroots, the funding. Yet this is not a slam dunk. We need to counter, to challenge, to campaign, loudly and repeatedly. And for the love of country, vote! Our democracy and our Constitution are under siege, and it’s not from godless Communists, it’s from a soulless Republican party trying desperately to hold onto its own power. Vote. That is the true protection program.
