Thank goodness for today’s court jesters, the motley fools who speak truth to power with humor and satire, going where others fear to tread. In the face of a Trump regime that prizes loyalty over all else, seeking blind obedience over competency and expertise, we need these voices. We need the Colberts, the Fallons, the Kimmels who, according to Trump, have “no talent.” And, of course South Park with its skewering of Trump in its 27th (27th!) season premiere. “This show hasn’t been relevant in 20 years.” You keep thinking that. The more Trump sputters and protests, the more the satire is finding its mark. Trump’s glee in Colbert’s cancellation and his not-so-veiled threats against other late night hosts (“They’re next”) may be premature. Cancelling Colbert (just like firing the Bureau of Labor Statistics commissioner) will not change or silence the message. This is free speech in all of its messy glory; agree or disagree as you like. It is truth to power in a time when Trump would silence any and all dissent. These voices, our voices must be heard. We must speak our truths in the face of this scary, authoritarian, unconstitutional Trumpist court. Here’s to the jesters, the motley fools, the voices of dissent. Courage is contagious.
