Something rotten

Our House Representative Brian Fitzpatrick showed his true MAGA allegiance as he voted in favor of Trump’s abominable budget bill. Lines from Shakespeare’s Hamlet come to mind.  “I am sick at heart.” and “Something is rotten in the state of Denmark.” Hamlet speaks of a government of corruption and moral decay. Sound familiar? I am sick at heart that Fitzpatrick would do something so rotten - to vote for the rich and steal from the poor. It is rotten to take away funding for Medicaid and SNAP - vital supports for so many of Fitz’s constituents.  It is rotten that the promised tax cuts in this bill go to the rich.  It is rotten that these tax cuts  will be offset by cuts to Social Security and Medicare. It is rotten that this bill will add trillions of dollars to the deficit. I am sick at heart  that this bill was passed by merely one vote; what a difference Fitz could have made had he voted to stand for those he represents instead of those he aspires to be like. I am sick at heart but I still hope. The effects of this slashing of funding for education, housing and health programs are truly (and ironically) bi-partisan. We will all  be adversely affected, Republican and Democrat alike.  When Trump was on the campaign trail in Las Vegas last June, he warned the crowd, “I don’t care about you. I just want your vote.” Are we listening now?  Can this common  threat, this bill, this something rotten, galvanize us to seek common ground, to be nonpartisan, to unite across the aisle against this all-encompassing threat to these programs that help so many of us, our friends and our families? Fitz won’t do it, so it’s up to us.
